SUNY Cobleskill has announced that long-time Director of Sport & Exercise Kevin McCarthy has retired after nearly 25 years of service to the College.
McCarthy came to Cobleskill in the fall of 1992 to serve as the Fighting Tigers head men's basketball coach and as an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education.
In 1995 he assumed the role of athletic director.
During his career at Cobleskill, McCarthy played a major role in the development of the Department of Sport & Exercise and the Fighting Tigers Athletic Program.
He also guided the college through a successful transition from the junior college level of competition to the NCAA Division III ranks beginning in 2008.
As the men's basketball coach, McCarthy posted a career record of 339-119, 74 percent, in 15 years directing the Fighting Tigers program.
He was recognized by his peers as Mountain Valley Conference Men's Basketball Coach of the Year five times and was named the NJCAA District I Coach of the Year in 1998, 2005 and 2008.
Under his direction Fighting Tigers won NJCAA Region III Division III Championships in 1998, 2005 and 2008 reaching the NJCAA Final Four in 1998 and 2008.
In 2008, McCarthy was also honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) prestigious Guardian of the Game Pillar Award for Excellence in Education.
He was inducted into the New York State Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as well as the NJCAA Men's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
"I would like to thank Kevin McCarthy for his many years of service and the numerous contributions that he has made to both our College and the local community," said SUNY Cobleskill President Dr. Marion Terenzio.
"As we begin the process of putting together a national search to find a successor, I have appointed Associate Athletic Director Mary Irving to serve as Interim Athletic Director.
