Schoharie site for this year's free community Thanksgiving

By Patsy Nicosia

Schoharie County's Thanksgiving Day Committee will serve up its 29th meal of turkey and all the trimmings at a new location:
The Schoharie United Presbyterian Church.
The SUPC will be the site for both the sit-down dinner and take-outs on Thanksgiving, November 24, said longtime organizer Kevin Neary of Richmondville.
"That's a little different than the past, but they have great facilities and it's easier than having to drag things like pots and pans in and out," Mr. Neary said.
"We put out a request and they answered. We're very grateful."
The dinner-like always-is free.
"After all these years, it still fits a need," Mr. Neary said. "We believe in's a way to bring people together. I keep threatening to retire, but really? We pull it together in just a couple of meetings.
Mr. Neary's longtime assistants include Ethel Benninger, former Office for the Aging head, and Donna Whalen, who coordinates transportation.
For home-delivered meals, call the OFA at 295-2001.
For sit-down reservations and take-outs or to volunteer to help out, call Ms. Whalen at 234-8259.
Though in the past the effort's requested donations of turkeys and the like, Mr. Neary said this year they're looking mostly for cash contributions.
Checks for the dinner can be sent to: Thanksgiving Day Dinner, PO Box 177, Richmondville, NY 12149.
For those who'd like to contribute something more tangible, Mr. Neary said there's always a place for more desserts.
For information on that or more information about the dinner, call one of the above numbers or Mr. Neary, 294-6543.
