An accident on I-88 early Saturday morning claimed the life of a SUNY Cobleskill student.
Douglas Alvarez, 19, a first-year Business Administration student at the college, died in the crash, according to State Police in Oneonta.
Mr. Alvarez was from Mamaroneck.
Troopers and SUNY Cobleskill gave the following account:
Six college students were eastbound on I-88 in the Town of Maryland at 4am when their vehicle left the road, entered the center median and rolled over several times, ejecting Mr. Alvarez.
The vehicle came to rest in the westbound lanes and was struck by another vehicle that was traveling west.
Mr. Alvarez was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
The other five passengers were taken to Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, with non-life threatening injuries.
Alcohol was not a contributing factor to the accident.
The operator of the second vehicle was not injured.
College President Marion Terenzio expressed sympathy to Mr. Alvarez’s family.
The college offered support and counseling for anyone needing the service.
