Bargains galore at Sunshine Fair; fun starts Saturday
By Patsy Nicosia
There will be plenty of animals, attractions, and bargains when the 141st Schoharie County Sunshine Fair opens this Saturday.
That’s according to Doug Cater, Fair president for longer than he—or almost anyone else—can remember.
The 2017 Fair runs Saturday, July 29 through Saturday, August 5 with the theme, “Bushels of Fun, Making Memories.”
And with a solid mix of new and old, Mr. Cater said, there will be plenty of opportunities for that.
Once again, he said, visitors will pay one price for admission, something that gets them unlimited rides on the midway and free parking.
If the Fair runs out of parking on its grounds—and Mr. Cater’s keeping his fingers crossed that it does—there will once again be parking at the former Guilford Mills with a free shuttle.
New this year, nearly a dozen concessions and vendors will be offering coupon discounts.

On Senior Day, Tuesday, August 1, all senior citizens will be admitted free until 4pm and Saturday, August 5, the last day of the Fair, will be American Heroes Day, with all veterans with an ID admitted free and a 3pm concert by the 42nd Infantry Division Band.
Other musical entertainment will include Aaron Tippin, also on the 5th, as well the ever-popular Johnny Cash Tribute, Jimmy Stirr’s Polka Time, and on opening night, Billy Gilman.
Wednesday will be the Fair’s third annual bike give-away with 88 bikes looking for new homes at last count.
There will also be a miniature circus exhibit (see related story), Heritage Park and Professor Chalmers B. Childs’ Amazing Patent Medicine Magic Show & Flea Circus, and SUNY Cobleskill’s expanded Canine Center.
At visitors’ request, Mr. Cater said, there’s an expanded lineup of motorized events in front of the grandstand and plenty of livestock shows.
“There’s a lot going on every day and we really hope people will come down and make the most of it all,” Mr. Cater said.
