Middleburgh Meadows gets ready to open

The long-awaited supermarket for the Schoharie Valley will open next Friday, January 26.
The opening in Middleburgh comes more than six years after Irene flooding closed the Grand Union and answers a need many have asked for.
The market is in Middleburgh Meadows, being developed by Jim and Jason Becker and their partner, Carver Laraway.
The Valley Market is in Geanine Eisel’s name, and she and her husband, Jim, will manage the store. They also operate a Great American market in Prattsville.
The Valley Market is 16,000 square feet, about the size of the Hannaford supermarket in Duanesburg. The new store is across from the former Grand Union on Route 30 in Middleburgh.
“It will be a full-service market similar to the one in Prattsville but bigger,” said Mr. Eisel.
The Valley Market will have full produce and meat sections, plus dairy, deli, bakery and frozen food items, he said.
“It will have everything you need,” Mr. Eisel said. “I think people will be surprised at the variety and the prices.”
Since the Irene flood, several efforts to bring a market to the Schoharie Valley never got beyond the talking phase. This project did. Plans for the Valley Market were announced in 2015, and construction started last year.
“We’re just about as excited as everyone in Middleburgh,” Mr. Eisel said.
