Seasonal roads get another month...welcome to spring

Just how bad has March’s weather been?
So bad that Schoharie County has taken the unprecedented move of pushing back the no-maintenance date on seasonal use roads until May 1.
Normally, towns try to get the roads open by April 1.
But Department of Public works Commissioner Dan Crandell told supervisors Friday that with snow accumulations of as much as 46 inches in some places—and that’s before what’s forecast for this Wednesday into Thursday—most of them are going to need more time.
In some places, Mr. Crandell said, there’s five or six feet of snow once you get a few hundred feet in.
“I’ve talked to a lot of the towns already,” he said, “and it would be to their advantage to give them another month.”
Though the decision is up to individual towns, supervisors supported the idea—if not that of more snow.
Mr. Crandell suggested towns might want to put labels on their signs noting the change—for this year only—and might also want to consider sending letters to seasonal property owners that might be impacted.
