After 40 years, Richmondville

Randy Crapser is celebrating 40 years with the Bank of Richmondville, and employees are making sure he remembers his special days.
The Cobleskill branch on Friday held an open house for Mr. Crapser, a longtime Richmondville resident who arrived courtesy of Eric Haslun driving a Richmondville Fire Department truck.
Employees lined East Main Street in Cobleskill, holding balloons and a banner when Mr. Crapser arrived at 8am. He was honored with confetti and a gold Burger King crown.
Inside were refreshments and a time for Mr. Crapser to visit with employees, friends and longtime bank customers.
This was the second open house for Mr. Crapser. The first was March 8 in Richmondville, where Mayor Kevin Neary rolled out a carpet in front of the bank for the honoree. The third open house will be next Friday, the 22nd, at the Schoharie branch, 9am-11am.
Mr. Crapser started at the Richmondville branch––the only one at the time––in 1979, hired for bookkeeping by Maurice Sperbeck.
“I got out of the Navy on March 9 and started on the 16th,” he said.
Mr. Sperbeck must have known his man.
“He asked, ‘Can you type,’ ” Mr. Crapser said, making a hunt-and-peck motion. “And Maurice said, ‘that’s okay.’ ”
The Cobleskill branch opened in 1982. Mr. Crapser moved over to the Cobleskill office in 1986, later becoming president of the bank in 1996, a position he’s held ever since.
“I did a little bit of everything––bookkeeping, assistant cashier, cashier,” he said, adding with a laugh, “I did everything except being a teller. They probably didn’t want me handling money.”
Most of all, Mr. Crapser remembers the people––employees and customers both.
“I’ve seen so many people come and go,” he said. “So many nice people from so many walks of life.”
