A Sharon Springs man was killed in an accident at the intersection of Routes 20 and 80 in Richfield Springs after Sate Police said he deliberately drove into a Sheriff’s Department cruiser, sending Deputy Jim Mateunas to the hospital with two broken legs.
Dead is Matthew E. All, 23.
State Police said just after 2:30pm last Tuesday, May 21, Troopers at Richfield Springs approached a subject in a vehicle who had been accused of harassing and then threatening a victim with a knife.
They said the suspect—Mr. All--led from Troopers and a pursuit traveling east on Route 20 ensued.
As Mr. All approached the intersection of Routes 20 and 80, Deputy Mateunas was in his vehicle, facing west, and monitoring the pursuit with his emergency lights activated.
For an unknown reason, they said, Mr. All crossed into oncoming traffic and struck Deputy Mateunas head-on.
Deputy Mateunas was transported to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Mr. All was pronounced dead at the scene by Otsego County Coroner Michael Fox.
