Bellevue Builders Supply’s Richmondville location won’t stay vacant for long.
Curtis Lumber announced last week that it bought the Richmondville lumberyard and also a Bellevue site in Sidney.
Bellevue announced in mid-July that it was closing and has had a sale on goods since then. There was concern that the building would remain an empty shell.
But Curtis announced the purchase Thursday, saying the business would carry “premium products, superior hardware assortment” and have an experienced staff, according to a press release.
“Working with builders and homeowners along the Interstate 88 corridor, we recognized the need for additional store locations to serve them,” said President and CEO Jay Curtis.
Based in Ballston Spa, Curtis has 21 locations––plus Richmondville and Sidney–-and already serves this area to some degree, said Curtis’s Kylie Holland in a phone interview.
“But now there will be a location in your backyard,” she added.
Ms. Holland said the changeover will come before the first of the year as Curtis remodels and stocks the Richmondville store.
“We want that gap to be as short as possible, but the first of the year to be safe,” she said.
Ms. Holland said the Richmondville site will have about 10 employees and will be advertising the jobs.
“It will be a full-service lumberyard with all the high qualities of other Curtis locations,” Ms. Holland said.
Curtis Lumber was founded in 1899, and its other locations are across Upstate New York and Vermont. The company has more than 600 employees.
The Richmondville yard was built as a Bellevue site, then became a Stock lumberyard before reverting to Bellevue again. Bellevue was leasing the site, Ms. Holland said.
