Under frosty, blue skies, about 75 Town of Carlisle residents gathered Saturday to help Supervisor John Leavitt cut the ribbon on their new Community Walking Trail.
The mile-long loop is just part of the family-focused changes outside the Town Hall on Crommie Road.
There’s a pavilion and basketball court there, last year the Youth Recreation Department and Town Board worked together on an ice-skating rink, and next, Mr. Leavitt said, they plan to add softball and baseball fields to the spot.
“This is really just the start,” he said.
Councilman Katie Schweigard, who worked with the Rec Department to develop the trail—construction was funded by an Iroquois Transmissions Systems grant with help from Cobleskill Stone, Highway Superintendent Mike Broadwell and volunteers---said it give families a safe place to walk, run, or ride their bikes without having to travel.
“I was tired of having to drive to Richmondville,” she said of the Cobleskill Creek Trail, “and now we have a trail of our own.
“John and the Town Board deserve so much credit…every idea we’ve brought to them, they’ve supported. I hope this is just the beginning.”
