Saturday dedication at Sharon's Parsons Road Cemetery

10/23/2019

The Legionnaires of Sharon Springs American Legion Post 1269, invites the public to the dedication of the “Parson Road Cemetery” this Saturday October 26 at 11am.
Local support has enabled the Post to refurbish this old rural cemetery as a landmark of history and heritage.
More than two years Post 1269 was made aware that a Revolutionary War militiaman and his wife were buried in this cemetery.
Members have worked since then to reclaim this cemetery.
The cemetery was completely over grown with brush and large trees.
Post members have spent many hours, clearing the cemetery of its brush, large trees, and have located, cleaned, and repaired the grave stones of Revolutionary War militiaman, Christopher Rhines and his wife Cattarina (Heyns) Rhines.
About 20 other grave sites have been located by their footing stones, apparently their grave markers have been lost to time.
These sites have been identified by small white crosses.
Local citizens donated a split rail fence which now surrounds three sides of the cemetery, a 20 foot flag pole, a 4 foot by six foot, “Made in the USA” flag, a sign identifying the Parsons Road Cemetery, and a bench which has been placed by the flag pole.
Many others have contributed funds, equipment, time, and encouragement.
The Sons of the American Revolution have also been helpful in providing the expertise, assistance and will also provide a sign which will identify the cemetery as a historical site.
