For the fourth time since the 2016 election, Cobleskill will stand up and together for women’s rights this Saturday as part of Women’s March 2020.
Emma Trahan, a college freshman from Canajoharie who helped put together Cobleskill’s student-led March for Our Lives against gun violence in 2018, is organizing the rally, set to begin at 1pm in Veteran’s Memorial Centre Park.
The event is still coming together locally, but around the world, tens of thousands of participants are expected to take part.
“I think it’s important for people to realize that women’s rights are all-inclusive,” Ms. Trahan said.
“We talk about climate, immigration…they’re all linked to women’s issues. We are the change-makers and the clock is ticking,” especially since 2020 is a Presidential election year.
“This is our chance to make a difference.”
Ms. Trahan said she also sees Saturday’s rally as a place for like-minded people to come together—especially young people like herself who are just realizing the importance of political action.
“In rural areas, it can feel a little isolating to speak out, but one of our strengths is that it just takes a few people to make a difference,” she said.
“And working for social justice can be exhausting…you have to do it every single day. That’s why events like this are important. It brings people together. They’re reenergizing.”
Everyone’s welcome at Saturday’s rally, which is expected to last about an hour.
