Cobleskill considers community gardens

Interested in putting in your own tomatoes, pumpkins, and potatoes?
The Town of Cobleskill could have just the spot.
COVID-19 has spurred a renewed interest in backyard gardening and Monday, Cobleskill Supervisor Leo McAllister threw out the possibility of opening a portion of Doc Reilly Park in Howes Cave for a community garden.
The idea drew support from councilmen as well as from Cobleskill Mayor Becky Terk.
“I think it makes sense,” Mayor Terk said. “Maybe it will bring out people’s green thumbs.”
Any plans will have to move forward quickly, though; most gardeners like to have their seeds and plants in by Memorial Day.
The community garden would also have to be fenced to keep out hungry deer and rabbits; there was some discussion that local businesses selling garden supplies might be willing to donate it at cost with the Highway Department—or even the town board—pitching in to put the fence up.
Anyone who supports the community garden idea or who wants to help get it going or get involved can call Mr. McAllister at (518) 234-3773.
