COVID-inspired Road Rally benefit for food bank

5/13/2020

Looking for a safe and fun way to get out of the house Saturday and help raise money—or collect food--for a good cause?
Then gas up your car or truck and join the Cobleskill United Methodist Church’s Schoharie County Road Rally, set to begin at 1pm this Saturday, May 16, at the Cobleskill Elks Lodge parking lot on Legion Drive, across Main Street from McDonald’s.
A $10 donation or a bag of groceries is required and will be given to the CUMC’s food pantry.
There’s no pre-registration; just show up with a full tank of gas and at least one driver and one navigator.
The course may be as long as three hours, with no planned bathroom breaks along the way, so plan accordingly.
Vehicles will line up in the Elks Lodge parking area beginning at 1 pm.
Drivers will be given a map—a sheet of directions—and assigned a number, and will leave the area at three-minute intervals.
The map will indicate certain “stop areas” where each navigator will pick up an item to bring back to the Elks Lodge as proof that they made it.
The ultimate winner will be the vehicle team that completes the course having collected all items and returning in a time period closest to having traveled at an average speed of 30mph.
There will be a food truck available at the Elks Lodge, with food and drinks, at the finish of the race.
All participants are expected to follow social gathering protocols and should remain in their vehicles as much as possible.
The rally course will include some unfamiliar back roads.
Some will not be paved and some may be wet or slippery, so an experienced driver is a necessity.
Organizers will drive the course in a Honda S-2000 Sports Car drive prior to the event to assure that all roads can be navigated.
The Cobleskill United Methodist Church Food Pantry is located at 107 Chapel Street and is open to all Schoharie County residents on Fridays from 9:30am-noon.
It also offers deliveries within the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District.
The pantry has been serving approximately 50 meals each week providing food staples, fruits, vegetables, toiletries, diapers, and more.
