This summer may be a quiet one––except for fireworks––in Cobleskill.
Mayor Becky Terk told village trustees last Tuesday that the COVID-19 pandemic put a huge crimp on outdoor activities.
She spoke with Schoharie County Public Health Director Amy Gildemeister, who said Cobleskill shouldn’t hold its annual Independence Day parade.
Also, Mayor Terk added, there won’t be the usual July 4 festivities at the Fairgrounds because large gatherings aren’t permitted.
“We’ve had everything else taken away,” Mayor Terk said of the pandemic. “We’re supposed to be celebrating our independence, and we’ve had that taken away.”
The village will proceed with fireworks, she said. Fireworks are usually touched off at the Fairgrounds, but Mayor Terk is trying to find a higher elevation for the shoot-off.
A higher elevation would allow more people to see them without gathering in one place, Mayor Terk said.
As for opening the village pool, that’s on hold, she added, because authorities haven’t given the go-ahead to open public pools.
Even if the pool doesn’t open, it will be drained and filled, said Water Superintendent Joe Redmond.
Unopened and left untouched, the pool would need more work to open next year, Mr. Redmond said.
