As part of its efforts to help feed not only Sharon Springs, but neighboring communities, the Sharon Springs Rotary will hold a free food distribution Tuesday, March 30, from 2:30-5pm at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center.
Everyone is welcome.
And that means everyone, said Pam Baxter, a longtime Rotarian involved in the effort.
“We all eat. We all need food,” she said. “We want to get the word out there that this isn’t a hand-out, it’s a hand up that we can all use. Rotarians too.
“Our economy’s not the best here. If people can save on what they have to spend on groceries, that’s money they can use on other things. We urge everyone—everyone—to take advantage of this. Don’t worry that you’ll be ‘taking it away from someone else.’ There will be plenty.”
Like other free food distributions, the Rotary’s is being run through the Northeast Regional Food Bank.
There’s no registration requirement; people just need to show up and Rotarians and other volunteers, including a team from Sharon Springs Central School, will load their trunk with a box of food that typically includes a couple kinds of meat, fresh produce, cheese, yogurt, and other groceries.
Ms. Baxter said they’ll have enough food for 250 meals.
“That’s a lot of food to put through Sharon Springs, but we’re hoping that if we can prove there’s a need. We can keep doing this, maybe every few months,” she said.
“We know other nearby food pantries and Rotaries are looking at this too.”
Though Rotary already has about 15 volunteers signed up to help on the 30th, there’s plenty of room for more. Contact Rotary President Elliott Adams at (518) 441-2697 for more information.
