COVID numbers pause football, volleyball

Cobleskill-Richmondville ‘high-risk’ sports paused because of COVID last week––and maybe this week, too.
C-R football and girls’ volleyball games were suspended Friday because Schoharie County’s rolling average of COVID positivity rose above four percent.
Girls’ soccer on Friday was also postponed, but that was more because of pounding rain and additional concern for COVID safety, according to Athletic Director John Henry.
Football and volleyball, meanwhile, remain day-to-day this week. C-R checks the positivity rate every day at 10am, and if it falls below four percent, the sports will likely resume, Superintendent Carl Mummenthey said.
As of Sunday, the county’s positivity rate was 4.4 percent.
After dropping below 4 percent, Wednesday it was back up to 4.6 percent; Middleburgh Central School has now paused girls' volleyball.
The C-R football team is slated to host Broadalbin-Perth on Friday evening. It’s a switch––also caused by the positivity rate––from the original schedule, which had C-R hosting Hudson.
The positivity rate in Fulton County, home to Broadalbin-Perth, was above four percent, like Schoharie County.
Had C-R hosted Hudson and B-P played Glens Falls, its original opponent, both games might have been postponed because of high positivity rates in Schoharie and Fulton counties.
Friday’s game between C-R and B-P can come off if rates in both counties fall below four percent.
If the two teams were playing their original opponent, postponements “might have affected four teams,” Mr. Mummenthey said.
“This [new schedule] minimizes the impact of a cancellation. But hopefully things break in our favor and we can play.”
Hudson and Broadalbin-Perth can find new opponents or perhaps play each other.
Volleyball matches early this week were paused, but matches may resume if the positivity rate drops.
C-R boys’ and girls’ soccer and cross country are also competing this week.
