Marathon to mark 25th anniversary Saturday, virtually again

Even as the pandemic drags on, the Marathon for a Better Life continues to help Schoharie County cancer patients.
And for the second year in a row, the Marathon will be mostly virtual for safety’s sake this Saturday.
It’s the 25th year for the Marathon, which in its history has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to cancer patients––no questions asked––with a simple premise: Have cancer, live in Schoharie County.
Events Saturday start on Zoom and Facebook at 10am at Stella Motors on McArthur Avenue, Cobleskill. Recognition of cancer survivors and caregivers and presentation of Angel awards will start the opening ceremonies.
Also, from 10am to 5pm, teams that raised money all year can drop off their donations, as can any individuals who want to help.
“We’re not encouraging people to gather, but if they want to stop by and say hello, that’s great,” said Marathon President Kathy Diamond.
Money’s the most important part. Ms. Diamond estimated the Marathon gave $85,000 to cancer patients last year.
“It never would have happened if people didn’t keep us in their hearts,” Ms. Diamond said.
She especially pointed to Dave Handy of Sharon Springs Garage, who provided a Kubota zero-turn mower at cost for a raffle, and the Eagles’ Dale Nunamann, whose organization has been raising money all year.
Saturday’s Marathon, however, isn’t all about money. Between noon and 2pm, there will be virtual performances by local bands and appearances by Marathon teams and board members.
Those stopping by can also purchase 25th anniversary tee shirts and luminaries that traditionally signal the end of the Marathon.
“You can buy a luminary and set it off on your porch,” Ms. Diamond said. “Light up the night.”
In the minds of many will be the late Cherie Stevens, who started the Marathon. Ms. Stevens died in 2018.
“Cherie started the Marathon 25 years ago, and here we are,” Ms. Diamond said. “The heart just lives on.”
