"After the Storms" looks at flood, recovery

“After the Storms”, a multi-media exhibit honoring the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee and the 36,000-plus volunteers who helped Schoharie County recover, will open at the Schoharie River Center on Saturday, August 28.
The public is invited to an opening reception from 2-4pm.
The exhibit will be on view weekends through September at the SRC’s Cultural Hall, 2047 Burtonsville Road, Esperance.
After that, it will move to the Zadock Pratt Museum in Prattsville through October, then to the New York Power Authority’s Visitor’s Center in North Blenheim through March 2022.
On May 1, 2022, the exhibit will open again at the Old Stone Fort in Schoharie.
“After the Storms: 10 Years and 36,000+ Volunteers Later,” includes audio and video stories, photographs, and newspaper accounts of the devastating flooding—and recovery—that began in August 2011.
It’s based on substantial oral history research that began in 2014; Schoharie Area Long Term Recovery—now SALT Development—and the Zadock Pratt Museum, in collaboration with New York Folklore, captured more than 60 interviews with both residents impacted by flooding and the volunteers who showed up to help rebuild community.
The exhibit is funded through grants from Humanities New York, Fenimore Asset Management, MIDTEL, Stewart’s Shops, the Documentary Heritage Program of the New York State Archives, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
It’s also received partnership support from the Schoharie County Historical Society/Old Stone Fort, Zadock Pratt Museum, Schoharie River Center, and NYPA.

As Schoharie County nears the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, SALT, one of the organizations formed in the aftermath of devastating flooding, has put together a year-long series of events to pay tribute to recovery.
The event includes “After the Storm,” a multi-media traveling exhibit opening August 28 at the Schoharie River center.
The SALT Board of Directors is planning a series of reflective essays; look for the first one in the August 26 edition of the Times-Journal.
In addition, a t-shirt contest, online auction, and return of the Bounty Dinner, set for July 13, 2022, are also being planned.
The commemorative fundraising events will help SALT continue its missions of providing community grants and staying “action-ready,” to assist the Schoharie County Office of Emergency Management Services during emergencies; recent efforts have included sewing and distributing masks at the start of COVID in 2020.
