Snow downs trees, lines; thousands without power

More than 190,000 National Grid customers lost power Tuesday after a wet, heavy spring snowstorm battered the region, taking down trees and wires.
Wednesday morning, 804 Schoharie County customers remained without power; weather observers reported as much as 10 inches of snow in some areas.
In Otsego County, which is served by National Grid, NYSEG, and REA, 19,250 customers were without power Tuesday with more than 300 NYSEG lines reported on the ground.
Otsego County officials estimated it could be 72 hours or more before all power was restored and were distributing dry ice and bottled water and opening warming centers.
According to officials, at the storm’s peak on Tuesday morning, more than 195,000 customers across the state were without power.
The Department of Public Service received reports of significant tree damage throughout the Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley and North Country regions.
Broome County experienced more than 45,000 outages, while Chenango, Fulton, Otsego, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Warren Counties all experienced between 10,000 and 16,000 outages.
Damage assessment crews from the utility companies continue to work to determine the extent of pole and conductor damage.
Both National Grid and NYSEG have secured more than 1,000 additional line personnel and are shifting resources into the affected areas.
