Shots fired in Cobleskill. Again

Gunshots rattled the quiet neighborhood of Parkway Drive, Cobleskill Saturday morning, and police are continuing to investigate.
Although nobody was injured when two shots were fired into a house, the Saturday incident is the latest of several gunshot cases in Schoharie County.
The shots were fired into the side of the house facing Parkway Drive, according to Cobleskill Police Chief Jeff Brown, who added that the shooting may have been a drive-by, and “we think a vehicle was involved.”
The residence was occupied, and Chief Brown believed the homeowner called 9-1-1.
Cobleskill officers and Schoharie County Sheriff’s deputies interviewed witnesses and collected evidence, which Chief Brown said were shell casings and spent bullets.
Police aren’t releasing the caliber of the gun and aren’t sure of the motive for the shooting.
“We don’t know for sure, and we’re looking into it,” Chief Brown said. “We don’t know of any specific motive.”
Police are sending the shell casings and bullets to a State Police lab. It’s possible the striations on the bullets match those used in another crime, which could develop into a lead, Chief Brown said.
Also, DNA from the shell casings may provide another lead, he said.
“We’re still following up,” he added. “If it goes far enough, we can get a search warrant,” probably for the weapon.
Police believe Saturday’s incident is isolated, and there’s no threat to the general public.
The shooting is the fourth episode in the county in recent months.
There were gunshots in West Fulton in March, a murder in Warnerville in late January and shots fired in the Division Street parking lot in Cobleskill in October.
None are related, but the spate of shootings is unusual. Other than the West Fulton incident, they appear to be the result of arguments.
“Back in the day, people used to settle arguments with their fists,” Chief Brown said. “Today’s culture, some feel [shooting] is an easier way to deal with it.
“You can hurt or kill someone with your fists, but obviously shooting is more dangerous.”
