Marathon for a Better Life is back in-person for the first time in three years.
Held only virtually in 2020 and 2021, the walk that aids Schoharie County cancer patients is this Saturday at SUNY Cobleskill.
“We’ve put a lot of effort into making it an event this year,” said Marathon President Kathy Diamond.
The day-long activities are the centerpiece of Marathon’s work––providing support and money to local cancer patients.
Since last July 1, Marathon has given $117,000 to Schoharie County cancer patients, no questions asked.
“It’s what we do,” Ms. Diamond said. “It’s a very personal thing.”
Cancer patients’ needs remain the same, but the demand on the Marathon is growing. In its 25 years, Marathon’s name has become well-known in the health-care field.
Appeals come not only from patients served locally, but also Schoharie County patients at Bassett Cooperstown, New York Oncology, Hospice, Helios Care and others.
“Their staffs are keyed into Schoharie County,” Ms. Diamond said. “It’s definitely allowed us to help more people.”
To that end, Marathon teams raise money all year and also on the day of the event, when it all comes together.
So far, 13 teams have registered, but anyone can participate Saturday.
“It’s not too late to register. Everyone’s welcome,” Ms. Diamond said.
The venue has changed a bit. The Marathon in other years has been behind Champlin Hall. This year, it’s on the college track.
“We’re excited about that,” Ms. Diamond said. “Vendors and other activities will be in the center, and teams will walk on the track.”
The opening ceremony is at 10am with college President Marion Terenzio welcoming participants. The cancer survivors’ lap follows, and the closing ceremony is at 8:45pm with a luminaria display.
In between there will be craft vendors, a live band, line-dancing lessions from Chieftans line dancers, an auction, games and activities for kids, Gaige’s French Fries, face painting, Brian Garreau and BFG entertainment as DJs and more. (See schedule.)
Ms. Diamond described the Marathon board as “wonderful, dedicated people.” They are:
Mina Stella, vice president; Dawn Bialkowski, secretary; Kim Law, treasurer; Larkin Nikolaus, Lauren Meyer, Dawn Schell, Bruce Tryon, Steve Chaisson, Jerry Law, Carly Diamond and Posie Shaw.
