Quilts go to aid Ukraine

9/29/2022

The Peaceable Day Quilters (PDQ) quilt guild of Cobleskill recently was able to give several large quilts made by their members to the members of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church of Watervliet and St Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Troy in support of their Ukrainian refugee relief efforts.
Fr. Mikhail of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church received both quilts from PDQ past co-chair Denise Tracy: one on behalf of his church, and the other which he will deliver to Fr. Vasyl of St Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The guild felt that these churches would be better positioned to decide how to utilize the quilts. They could possibly be given to a needy refugee family or raffled or auctioned for monetary donations.
Many members of the PDQ guild made the quilt blocks in the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag.
The pattern for the star-in-star design was obtained free from nationally-recognized quilt designer Pat Sloan, who also is supporting Ukrainian relief through UNICEF.
Enough blocks were submitted for two large and two baby-sized quilts, which were assembled and quilted over the summer by several PDQ members.
The PDQ quilt guild will be next gathering for their regular monthly meeting in person on Tuesday, October 4, from 10:30am-noon at the Fusion Church hall, 375 North Grand Street, Cobleskill.
The featured program will be a “Working with Cork” demo by Cindy Ryan.
All are welcome, and a special invitation to join us is extended to area quilters from beginner to experienced.
