Honor Flight plans retreat for Vietnam vets

If you served in Vietnam, give Greg Furlong a call.
The Cobleskill resident and president of Leatherstocking Honor Flight is organizing a retreat for Vietnam veterans set for May 19-21.
Free to vets, the retreat will be at Water’s Edge Cottages on Lake Pleasant near Speculator in the southern Adirondacks.
The retreat is through LHF Veterans Initiative, an outgrowth of Honor Flight that takes veterans to Washington DC to see patriotic sites.
But the retreat is different than the DC visits in that it’s more personal.
“There are peer-to-peer discussions about their military experience and how it’s affected them,” Mr. Furlong said.
“It’s not us preaching to them. It’s to get vets to experience the serenity of the Adirondacks and relax, get to know one another.”
There will be gatherings at campfires Friday and Saturday nights “where we’ll just shoot the breeze,” Mr. Furlong said.
For part of the time, veterans will be guests of International Paper that has a facility at nearby Lake Hamilton. Fishing boats and more will be available.
Eight Vietnam vets have signed up so far, and Mr. Furlong is looking for about 10 more.
