SCS will rewrite alma mater

“In the Valley of Schoharie,
History tells the tale,
How the white man won the warfare,
On the Indian Trail.
Lift the chorus,
Speed it onward,
Raise it to the sky.
We will ever spread the glory of Schoharie High.”

With an eye to changes required by State Ed, Schoharie Central School will be hiring an outside composer to work with students and staff to rewrite its alma mater.
On their own, a few years ago SCS cheerleaders changed some of the words in the song, replacing “white men,” with “wise men.”
But as part of rebranding the Schoharie Indian to Schoharie Storm, Superintendent Dave Blanchard said Thursday the alma mater needs to be rewritten.
Mr. Blanchard said members of the SCS Music Department didn’t feel up to the task, so they’ll be using Arts & Education funding to hire an outside composer to help.
“I look forward to seeing what they come up with,” he said.
Rebranding to Schoharie Storm has already begun in the gym Mr. Blanchard said, where existing banners are coming down in preparation for painting the walls; they’ll be replaced with banners featuring Schoharie Storm.
SCS has also ordered new sports uniforms.
Mr. Blanchard said the gym will be ready to use by the first of September—a tighter deadline than he likes, he said, but he held off, looking for a better price from vendors, never anticipating they’d be so hard to find because of the state directive.
New lawn signs will follow later this summer.
Some of the school’s chairs with the Indian logo will be auctioned off online in lots of two and four; Mr. Blanchard said he’ll share more information on that with alumni, parents and students as it becomes available.
“We have a full year to make this change,” he told School Board members, “but once we’ve started, let’s move forward. This is hard enough. Change is hard.”
