MCS grad McCoy joins Alfred as athletic trainer
7/13/2023 |
Alfred University Athletics is welcoming Lyndsey McCoy ’21 as a new assistant athletic trainer.
McCoy was a star member of the Alfred University women’s basketball team, stepping on campus in the fall 2017 semester.
She graduated in May of 2021 with her Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training and a minor in Exercise Science.
She is a Middleburgh Central School graduate.
“I am happy to be back at the place I called home for four years. I immediately fell in love with Alfred University and the surrounding community on my first visit as a high school student,” McCoy said.
“As a lifelong athlete and former student-athlete, I understand the importance of athletic trainers in maintaining the health and success of current and future Saxons.
“Alfred University prepared me very well for my future and I am happy to have this opportunity to be back with the Saxons.”
Prior to returning to AU, McCoy worked at Hornell City School District and Maple City Physical Therapy, providing healthcare to athletes on modified, junior varsity and varsity sports teams.
She also worked for Ironman/Muscleman in Geneva, reviewing the Emergency Action Plan for the venue and providing first aid to participants during the race as well as providing coverage of the Hornell Dodgers/Steamers, a non-profit organization that brings baseball to the Southern Tier of New York, playing in the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
While McCoy was an undergraduate student at Alfred University, her responsibilities within her major had her helping cover the Saxon softball team, taking her on the road as an Athletic Training Student Assistant to places such as Florida during Spring Break and Eau Claire, Wisconsin for the Saxons’ 2021 run at the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
McCoy also clocked in time with the Saxon men’s and women’s track & field teams as well as the Saxon football team, taping, stretching, assessing injuries during practice and competition events and giving treatments for rehabilitation with therapeutic modalities such as cupping, ultrasound and electrical stim.
McCoy even gained experience as a substitute teacher at MCS, working in the elementary, middle and high schools.
McCoy is certified in CPR/AED for Pro Rescuers, Responding to Emergencies and First Aid through the American Red Cross, Psychological First Aid, COVID-19 Contact Tracing through Johns Hopkins University, Myofascial Cupping Practitioner and ImPACT Trained Athletic Training.
In the classroom as a Saxon, McCoy was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa and Chi Alpha Sigma Honors Societies and earned Empire 8 President’s List in all eight semesters at AU.
As a player, McCoy totaled 719 points despite a mock, shortened senior season of only nine games, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Prior to that, she played in all 25 games in each of her first three years, starting in 24 games each of her sophomore and junior years.
She graduated with the Alfred University school record for career free throw percentage, hitting 81.8 percent of her shots from the charity stripe.
McCoy totaled 153 free throws out of 187 attempts from the line. She hit 234 field goals with 98 of them coming from 3-point range while assisting on 160 buckets, pulling down 282 rebounds, stealing the ball 74 times and blocking four shots.
