Ag workshops to help with transitions

2/1/2024

Cornell Cooperative Extension will be hosting two workshops for farmers looking to transition into—or out of—agriculture.
The first will be held Saturday, February 10, 9am-3pm at the Knox Town Hall, 2192 Berne-Altamont Road, Altamont.
Sponsored by the Agriculture Advisory Committee for the Town of Knox and Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County, the workshop on farm transitions will include opening remarks by Assemblyman Chris Tague.
State Ag & Markets Commissioner Richard Ball and his son Ethan will be there to share their Schoharie Valley Farms transition story.
Experts from both federal and state agencies, local agricultural organizations, and the legal community will help explain the tax, legal and other complexities of passing a farm on to the next generation.
There will also be discussion on how to acquire the resources to start a new farm.
Register with Amanda Terhune (518) 765-3519 or ajt247@cornell.edu by Wednesday, February 7.
The $10 charge includes coffee and lunch.
The second workshop is an Aspiring Farmers Meeting, a unique opportunity to connect with Cornell Cooperative Extension Educators and agricultural service providers on Saturday, February 17, from 8:30am-3pm at Fulton Montgomery Community College, 2805 NY-67, Johnstown.
This day-long workshop will offer insights on land acquisition, crop selection, livestock production, financial planning, and navigating regulations and other topics.
Two breakout sessions will allow participants to learn about various aspects of starting a farm business.
The breakout topics are: livestock production, fruit and vegetable production, greenhouse and nursery production, farmland access, field crop production, and ideas on marketing what you wish to sell.
The workshop costs $30 per person or $50 for two people. The deadline for registering is February 9; contact Dara Boudreaux at (518) 765-3518 or email at tff24@cornell.edu.
