Cobleskill's McCarthy Tire closing; surprise news to employees, customers

Almost without public warning, McCarthy Tire Service in Cobleskill will close.
The closing was rumored over the weekend and then confirmed Tuesday by Amy Cameron, McCarthy’s marketing director in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
The business on Cobleskill’s East End will close in stages, depending on customers’ needs, Ms. Cameron wrote in an email, adding:
“Generally, our practical business operations will be done within 30 days.”
McCarthy has offered 10 Cobleskill employees similar positions at McCarthy shops in Oneonta and Albany.
“All other teammates have been offered priority status on all open positions in our entire footprint of over 70 locations,” Ms. Cameron wrote.
The site is for sale.
Ms. Cameron described the decision to close as difficult but also “strategic,” as McCarthy has made other investments in New York.
These improvements include a new retread manufacturing facility in Syracuse, buying a retreat manufacturing facility and tire shop in Farmingdale and additions to businesses in Syracuse and Menands.
Those moves allow McCarthy to address its “wider customer base across New York,” Ms. Cameron wrote.
The Cobleskill closing “allows us to optimize our resources and focus on strategic investments that enhance our overall service footprint,” she added.
McCarthy purchased Rua & Sons, a longtime auto repair and tire business, about 10 years ago. Rua started in Cobleskill in 1961.
