Still time to sign up for SCRABBLE

3/9/2024

There’s still time to hone your vocabulary skills for Literacy Volunteers’ SCRABBLE tournament next Saturday, March 16.
Held at Radez School in Richmondville, the tournament offers lively competition and the chance to win cash and bragging rights.
Two- to four-person teams play three SCRABBLE games, all with different and non-traditional rules, and the total combined scores determine the winners.
“It’s all about fun,” said Lisa Cardilli, Literacy Volunteers’ executive director. “Our tournament is competitive, but in a light way.
“Because the rules are different than traditional SCRABBLE, you don’t need to be an expert.”
The winning team gets $200, the next three get $100 apiece, and a team drawn at random gets $100.
Teams try to fill their boards with as many high-scoring words as possible. They can buy extra letters or pay to check a dictionary for difficult words.
Brian Dineen returns as emcee and will pitch trivia questions or prizes in between games. There’s also a giant raffle.
Cargie’s will offer a continental breakfast.
Warm-ups start at 8:30am, the tournament begins at 9, and it ends by noon.
This is a fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers, which teaches adults reading and math skills. The tournament costs $15 per player.
“For $15, you get games, trivia, a raffle and breakfast,” said Ms. Cardilli. “It’s a good deal.”
