In 2023, they opened for Foreigner.
This August?
The Yankees.
Schoharie Central School’s Leading Tones, a select choir ensemble under the direction of Carrie Styles, has been invited to sing the National Anthem at Yankee Stadium before a game on August 7, Superintendent Dave Blanchard said Thursday.
A spectator bus to the event has already sold out, with Mr. Blanchard joking he was the first to get a seat.
“It’s a credit to Carrie Styles and a great opportunity for our kids,” he told school board members.
Other opportunities this summer include Summer Enrichment at SCS, which has returned to a more traditional academic focus on reading and math skills for the 162 students taking part.
There are still activities like swimming lessons and visits to the Schoharie Library for younger students, Mr. Blanchard said, “but we’ve switched gears a bit.
“We haven’t changed our mindset over making school fun,” something SCS began focusing on when kids came back after COVID shutdowns, he said. “It’s just more of an academic focus.”
And fun too, said Summer Enrichment Principals Betsy Wright and Carley Ryan.
Ms. Wright said they got a grant for a game-based summer math curriculum for pre-K through eighth grade students that uses manipulatives that makes learning fun.
They’re also using a summer curriculum for reading, she said.
“The teachers and students really like it,” Ms. Ryan said. “Especially, the sixth, seventh, eighth graders. They’re learning without learning.”
Students in grades 4-8 are still getting an opportunity for free swim at Mine Kill State Park.
Traditional summer school for high school students needing more academic help is being held at Berne-Knox-Westerlo this year.
