The Cobleskill Rescue Squad is urging teens to join the squad’s Junior EMS.
The group trains and rides with rescue squad volunteers, getting an idea of whether they’d like to continue in emergency services or health care.
The squad has four Junior EMS now, according to Michaela Sperbeck, a squad volunteer and Junior EMS advisor.
“Most have some interest in the medical field, and this gives them a chance to see if they want to continue,” Ms. Sperbeck said.
Four past Junior EMS members have graduated from high school and are in the medical field, nursing or are emergency medical technicians, she said.
Junior EMS members come to squad meetings and drills and also “learn on the rigs,” Ms. Sperbeck said.
Squad members train them in CPR, first aid and other skills.
Junior EMS members can join volunteers on calls but won’t go on serious calls involving police, Ms. Sperbeck said.
Junior EMS members must be 14 or older and have finished eighth grade.
“We’ll take as many as want to come,” Ms. Sperbeck said.
