An elderly man who was injured by a cow last Tuesday at a Central Bridge livestock arena died Thursday.
Harold E. Lendrum, 78, of Tabor Road in Berne had been listed in critical condition at Albany Medical Center on Wednesday but died the next day, police said.
The cow apparently butted Mr. Lendrum several times with her head while being moved, said Sheriff John Bates.
Sheriff’s Bates noted that some calves were being moved at the same time and while it is unusual for a cow to injure someone, it is not unusual for an adult female to become very protective when calves are being moved.
The Sheriff’s office, members of the Central Bridge emergency squad and the Schoharie County EMS director responded to the Empire Livestock Sales arena on Route 30A in Central Bridge in Esperance last Tuesday afternoon for a report of a man injured by a cow, police said.
When they arrived, they found employees of the livestock business performing CPR on Mr. Lendrum in the back of a livestock trailer.
Mr. Lendrum was unloading a beef cow from the trailer when the cow turned on him, knocking him to the floor of the trailer, police said.
The beef cow then mauled him, causing a severe head injury, police said.
Employees were able to get the cow off the trailer and immediately attended to Mr. Lendrum, police said.
The employees and Central Bridge rescue personnel performed CPR and regained a pulse, police said.
Mr. Lendrum, police said, was air lifted to Albany Medical Center for treatment.
No tests were done on the cow, the Sheriff said.
He said he assumed the cow was later sold.
