Cohn wins Cobleskill

Roger Cohn won the Cobleskill supervisor’s race on Tuesday, leading a charge that saw Republicans tighten their grip on county government.
The GOP gained at least one supervisor’s seat, Richmondville, on the Board of Supervisors, and were leading a close race in Wright.
All results Tuesday night were unofficial.
In Cobleskill, Mr. Cohn, a former town councilman, defeated Democrat Bob Strother 789 to 516.
“My opponent ran a good race. It was a friendly race,” Mr. Cohn said. “Now we have some important projects ahead of us.”
County Republican Chairman Lew Wilson was pleased with Mr. Cohn’s victory.
“I’m so glad he won. Now we really can start talking with the village,” said Mr. Wilson, referring to Cobleskill town-village relations that were an issue in the election.
In Richmondville, Republican John Barlow won a three-way race, ousting incumbent Democrat Betsy Bernocco and defeating write-in candidate Bob Nied.
Mr. Barlow had 372 votes to 288 for Ms. Bernocco and 118 for Mr. Nied.
“John did very well,” Mr. Wilson said. “And I think Nied really pulled some votes away from Bernocco.”
In Wright, Tuesday’s totals showed Republican Bill Goblet defeating incumbent Democrat Sue Loden 338 to 333, but absentee ballots had not been tallied.
Voters re-elected Republican supervisors in other contested races. Earl Van Wormer, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, defeated Democratic challenger Pete Abbott, 366 to 207, in Esperance.
In Sharon, incumbent Republican Tony Desmond turned back a challenge from Democrat Ray Zeh, 293 to 101.
A write-in campaign by former Seward supervisor Carl Barbic fell short. In a race featuring two Democrats, Mr. Barbic lost to incumbent Larry Phillips, 188 to 151.
A closely-watched trustee’s race in the Village of Cobleskill went to former mayor Bill Gilmore. He defeated incumbent Rebecca Thillet, 320 to 77.
