Jefferson Central School named one of the best

12/12/2007

Jefferson Central School has been recognized by US News and World Report as one of “America’s Best High Schools.”
The magazine, working in conjunction with School Evaluation Services, analyzed achievement data from more than 18,500 high schools in 40 states.
Specifically, analysts studied three factors: High school performance on ELA and mathematics assessments; the proficiency rates of economically disadvantaged youth and students’ participation in and performance on AP exams administered by the College Board.
At JCS, student performance exceeded statistical expectations given the school’s relative poverty.
In addition, the proficiency rates for disadvantaged students exceeded the state average.
“We’re honored to be included on the list of America’s best high schools,” said Superintendent Carl Mummenthey.
“We set high expectations for all students. As a result, our students experience great success in the classroom despite the overwhelming obstacles some of them face every day.”
Mr. Mummenthey attributed the district’s success to the school’s faculty and staff.
“Our faculty and staff are top-notch,” he said. “This honor is a testament to their hard work.”
He also credited the students and their families and the district’s Board of Education.
“Our Board of Education establishes ambitious goals and sets high expectations for us all,” said Mr. Mummenthey.
