Hoping to bring the arts a littler closer to home, a group of residents has created the Richmondville Performing Arts Association.
The group’s first event—Bread, Soup and a Show—drew more than 75 people to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Friday, and now they’re off and running, said Dennis Shaw, one of the people behind it.
“There are a lot of wonderful opportunities throughout the county, but we’re trying to put something together closer to home,” Mr. Shaw said.
“We started out with a variety show because we wanted to involve as many people as possible. We had a good crowd Friday. Where we go from here is completely open.”
Right now, Mr. Shaw said, the group is probably leaning more toward local performers and performances than bringing in outside entertainment, but again, he said that’s open to change.
“I think we’re looking at offering something a little different from what’s already available locally,” he said, “but how this all develops will really depend on what types of performances people are interested in. Really? We’re up for anything.”
To that end, he said, they’d like to involve as many people as possible in the organization.
The group—which also includes Cherie Stevens, Posie Shaw, Becky Bilby, Renee Nied, and Vern Hall—began meeting in the fall.
Once they’ve recovered from Friday’s success, Mr. Shaw said, they’ll schedule a meeting to plan their next project; more help is always welcome.
