Someone broke into the United Methodist Church in Cobleskill between Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning and took a small amount of cash, said the Cobleskill Village Police.
The burglar pried open a door at the Chapel Street church between 1pm Sunday and 8am Monday, said Sergeant Rich Bialkowski. Police received the report Monday morning.
Aside from the money taken, nothing else was damaged or disturbed, police said.
Sergeant Bialkowski said the theft appears to fit the characteristics of other recent burglaries in Cobleskill, Schoharie and other areas.
The suspect or suspects, he said, “were strictly looking for cash” and left other items such as office equipment, computers, antiques and other church items that could have been taken and later sold.
The items left were “things of definite value,” Sergeant Bialkowski said.
There were other small amounts of money that were in other places but were not taken, he said, probably because they were not found.
The Cobleskill Police checked with other police agencies and there have been no similar reports of recent thefts and Sergeant Bialkowski said they have received no other reports of thefts from over the weekend.
