No-burn ban lifted

Schoharie County’s ban on outdoor burning was lifted a few days early after some long-awaited and badly needed rain.
In place since April 16, on Saturday the burn ban was extended another five days to end Thursday, May 1.
But Fire Coordinator Matt Brisley said after rain wet things down Saturday into Sunday and Monday brought a couple more inches of rain, the decision was made to lift the ban.
“Saturday we decided to go for the full five days in case the rain didn’t materialize, but things are looking a lot better now,” Mr. Brisley said.
During the burn ban, all outdoor burning, including burn barrels and outdoor fireplaces, were prohibited.
That didn’t stop people from burning anyway; some from ignorance of the ban, some in spite of it.
Mr. Brisley said violators can be charged, though usually they’re asked first to just put the fire out.
Though it’s moot for now, what’s the best thing to do if you see someone in violation?
“It depends on the situation,” Mr. Brisley said. “If you feel comfortable and it’s someone you know, you might want to remind them about the ban. Otherwise, you can always call the Sheriff’s Department and let them handle it.”
Cobleskill recorded 0.18 inches of rain Saturday into Sunday and Monday into Tuesday, 0.7 inches.
