Community Library rededication Saturday
4/30/2008 |
“It was a particularly happy thought,” Jared Van Wagenen, Jr. told people assembled for the dedication of the newly renovated Union St. School in October, 1937, that the building “once erected and dedicated to education and later deemed to have outgrown its usefulness, should finally return to its original purposes and in so doing attain perhaps a wider usefulness than it had ever known.”
After three years of fundraising, grant writing, planning and execution, the old Cobleskill Public Library, now The Community Library, will be rededicated on Saturday to the same purpose confidently anticipated by Mr. Van Wagenen.
Among the speakers at the event, beginning at 2pm, Saturday, will be Hon. Van Wagenen’s grandson, Rev. Jared Van Wagenen IV.
Joining him will be Roger Cohn, Town of Cobleskill supervisor; Christine Dickerson, library director; and Janet Sand, president of the library board of trustees. Kevin Neary, library trustee and Mayor of Richmondville, will act as master of ceremonies.
Music by the Catskill String Quartet, refreshments, special event postal covers, cancellations and postcards will be available after the formal ceremony, as will raffle tickets for The Friends of the Community Library’s second annual Basket Raffle on “Library Sundae,” the next day, at 1pm.
All members of the Cobleskill-Richmondville School District community and “all the countryside that lies around it,” included by Hon. Van Wagenen in his 1937 remarks, are welcome.
