The election season starts next week, with Republicans and Democrats voting in primaries on Tuesday.
Polls are open noon to 9pm.
Topping the ballots are candidates for the 21st Congressional District. Republicans have a slate of just two, while Democrats have five to pick from, plus state party offices to decide.
All are trying to replace retiring Democrat Mike McNulty, who served the district for 20 years.
Republicans will choose between Schenectady County legislator James Buhrmaster and Albany businessman Steven Vasquez.
Schoharie County GOP Chairman Lew Wilson is backing Mr. Buhrmaster.
“I’ve known him for a long time, and I like his values,” Mr. Wilson said. “He’s a businessman, and he’s got a good head for business.”
Democratic candidates are Tracey Brooks, an attorney from Coeymans; Paul Tonko, former assemblyman; Darius Shahinfar, an Albany attorney; Joseph P. Sullivan of Albany; and Phil Steck, an Albany attorney.
County Democratic Cliff Hay is a strong supporter of Mr. Tonko, who represented Schoharie County in the state Assembly years ago, before redistricting.
“He did a terrific job when he represented us, and he never forgot us,” Mr. Hay said. Paul’s done a lot for fire departments, the college, you name it. He’s by far the best candidate.”
The 21st Congressional District includes all of Schoharie, Albany, Schenectady and Montgomery counties and parts of Fulton, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties.
Democrats will also vote for representatives for the state committee in the 127th district, according to the county Board of Elections.
Voters are to cast ballots for one man and one woman. The men running are Richard G. Shultes and Carl L. Sand; the women, Betsy Bernocco and Ginny Kintz.
Finally, Democrats in Seward will vote for a member of the county committee. On the ballot are J. Carl Barbic, Larry R. Phillips and James Donohue.
