Though it is more than a year away, some Middleburgh Central School alumni are planning for a celebration next October to mark the district’s 100th anniversary and the 75th anniversary of the high school.
Alumni Cherie Clapper and Pauline Mercer spoke to the school board earlier this month about an event that would possibly include tours, music, exhibits and food next fall. Events will be held on the Saturday before Columbus Day.
The reunion committee had held a large reunion in 2007 and members were planning the next one for 2009 when the anniversaries were noted, the women said.
They asked the district for some help to provide insurance and some funding.
They also asked for permission to use areas of both schools.
Tours could be given, possibly by students, on Saturday and Sunday, and the gym lobby could be used to put up photographs of the old schools in the area. The cafeteria may be used for exhibits, the front steps and lawn may be used for music and the driveway by the high school may be used for a barbecue, Ms. Mercer said. All events would be held after the annual Fall Festival parade. A breakfast by the VFW is planned for that Sunday.
The group also plans to have a float in the annual parade.
Superintendent Michele Weaver agreed to represent the district in planning meetings and the board gave the go-ahead for the project.
The women said the committee will also work with the newly-formed alumni association.
In a separate matter, Ms. Clapper presented board members with plans for a framed plaque that will be displayed in the high school to honor donors who gave to the Gold Dome project that was completed this summer. About 75 names will be on the plaque.
A meeting will be held with the high school principal to decide on the size and location of the plaque.
