SCCAP collecting for holidays

Families who have less for the holidays will be getting a hand––but only with your help.
The Schoharie County Community Action Program is collecting food, toys and funds so that needy families can enjoy a special holiday meal this season.
Called the Build a Holiday Basket Campaign, SCCAP’s effort is likely to reach hundreds of local families, according to Nancy Dingee of SCCAP’s Community Services Department.
“We have 320 families in our database, but a few churches have adopted 10 to 25 families and other agencies are adopting families, too,” she said.
SCCAP is accepting donations of potatoes, boxed stuffing, cranberry sauce and other non-perishable food to stock the baskets.
Originally, Ms. Dingee said, SCCAP also planned to collect frozen turkeys.
“But with only a couple of people, we realized it would be time-consuming, heavy and difficult to store,” she said.
Instead, SCCAP is asking for monetary donations to buy food or meat cards to add to the baskets.
Ms. Dingee is also seeking toys and gifts. SCCAP has toys for younger children but needs gifts for the 12-to-18 age group.
Anyone who wants to donate food, money or gifts can send to or drop them off at SCCAP at 795 East Main Street, Suite 5, Cobleskill. Anyone with questions can call 234-2568 or 296-8523 and ask for Nancy, Michelle or Rebecca.
“Any donation is always greatly appreciated,” Ms. Dingee said. “The need is only going to be greater this year.”
