Summer film series at Community Library

7/1/2009

In keeping with the Summer Reading Program’s theme, “Be Creative at Your Library” for children and “Express Yourself” for teens, the community library didn’t want the adults to feel left out.
There will be a matinee series on Wednesdays in July, beginning at 1pm, featuring movies about “Tortured Artists” – specifically, composer Ludwig van Beethoven, artist Vincent Van Gogh, writers Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, and jazz singer Billie Holiday.
On July 1, the movie “Immortal Beloved,” on the life and death of Beethoven, will be shown. A 1994 movie, it stars Isabella Rossellini, Gary Oldman, and Jereon Krabbe, and is directed by Bernard Rose.
July 8 will feature “Lust for Life,” the 1956 movie starring Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn and directed by Vincent Minnelli. This film tells the story of tortured artist Vincent Van Gogh.
On July 15, “Sylvia” will be featured, telling the story of the relationship between Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig are in the starring roles, and it is directed by Christine Jeffs.
July 22, the film “Lady Sings the Blues” will be shown, telling the troubled life and career of jazz singer Billie Holiday, starring Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, and Richard Pryor, and directed by Sydney J. Furie.
Before each film, there will be a brief talk about the movie, the artist, the production of the film, and hints as to what to watch for as you view the film.
There will be light refreshments served at each showing.
