New Hannaford will be closer than you think

Schoharie County is getting a new supermarket.
Well, almost getting a new market.
Hannaford is building a supermarket in Schenectady County, but it’s only a few yards from the Schoharie County line.
Expected to open next June, the 35,000-square-foot Duanesburg market is just outside the Village of Esperance.
It’s on the north side of Route 20 near the intersection with Route 30.
The store is the smallest that Hannaford builds, according to the company’s website. It will be about the size of the former P&C market on the west side of Cobleskill, where Kelley Farm and Garden is now.
But small doesn’t mean it will be lacking, according to company spokesman Michael Norton.
He said the market will have a drive-through pharmacy, a bakery, natural foods and butcher and seafood departments.
“It’s a smaller supermarket, but it’s a good one. Very efficient,” Mr. Norton said. “It will have the full offering.”
Although it appears the market is far from a customer base––besides Esperance, there are few houses around––it will target the region, Mr. Norton said.
The market will draw from I-88 traffic nearby, along with Cobleskill and the Schoharie Valley, he said.
“It’s not just Duanesburg and Esperance,” Mr. Norton said. “It’s the whole area of people commuting on I-88. People crave convenience with their shopping.”
Ventura-Duanesburg LLC is doing the site work now. Christopher Schneck, partners with William Feinstein in the firm, said Thursday that the project is going smoothly.
The company is grading the site and will pour the pad and do the preliminary paving before turning it over to Hannaford for the actual construction, Mr. Schneck said.
“It’s our duty to deliver the site,” he said. “We’ll be done the beginning of October.”
Mr. Norton confirmed that construction will continue through the winter.
“We’re on schedule for June 2010,” he said.
Hannaford, based in Maine, has 169 supermarkets in New York, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
The nearest current Hannaford market is on Route 20 in Guilderland.
