Nadeau for sure; town machines impounded

When Mark Nadeau introduced himself as the Village of Cobleskill’s next mayor five months ago he wasn’t kidding.
By nearly a 2-1 margin, 416-241, Mr. Nadeau defeated opponent Sandy MacKay for the village’s top post.
In the Town of Cobleskill, Tom Murray narrowly slipped by Linda Angell, 657-648; Ms. Angell’s calling it too close to call.
“We’re getting a court order to impound the machines,” she said late Tuesday.
“There were problems with three districts and there are still 60 ballots out. Nine votes is just too close. I’ve been here before.”
Mr. MacKay, the village’s deputy mayor who didn’t run again as trustee so he could bid for mayor, said he plans to continue to be involved, especially downtown.
“I’m really grateful to all the people who supported me,” he said.
“There’s still a lot that needs to be done and I’ve been involved in the community for a long time. That’s where I’ll focus my energies now.”
Mr. Nadeau all but burst on the political scene in June when he kicked off his unofficial campaign at a village board meeting introducing himself as the next mayor.
Tuesday’s margin left him a little speechless, but at the same time, was he surprised?
“Absolutely not. Absolutely not,” he said after the election results were announced.
“Now it’s time to get to work. We have a meeting with the town tomorrow and I’d like to see the contract signed that moves them in here” [the village offices].
Though he said he wasn’t surprised by his win, Mr. Nadeau said it’s still nice to be validated.
“Even when you know in your heart and soul that something is worth going after, it’s affirming to get the support of so many voters,” he said.
Although Ms. Angell has a lead in the supervisor’s race, it’s still neck-and-neck.
Election Commissioners Lew Wilson and Cliff Hay said ballots from the impounded machines must be counted within 10 days.
Also, Mr. Hay added, the absentee and military ballots must be counted within two weeks, so it may be until November 17 before the race is decided.
