MCS out the most in state aid delays

While most other school districts are out 10 percent in their December state aid payments, Middleburgh is out a lot more, at least for now.
Middleburgh has only $33,700 in lottery aid this month in state aid. A delay in filing their external audit in the fall will push their larger December state aid payment off until the middle of next month.
Middleburgh is not getting general state aid because the external audit was not done by October 15. MCS officials expect to get it done by January 13 and then they would get their aid. Michele Weaver said they expect 10 percent “cut” just like everybody else.
She did not want to give an exact figure on the state aid total but the district is also waiting for $666,000 in federal aid that was due at the end of the last school year.
The district did not get the audit done because of the transition between having a business administrator and switching to a BOCES-based person, the books were not where they needed to be to complete the audit by October 15, she said.
The business office, she added, “is a work in progress” and the “books were still being cleared up” in October.
In addition, there will be a 19 percent decrease in STAR reimbursements coming back to the school in January, Ms. Weaver.
On Wednesday, she said the district was looking at possibly taking out a revenue anticipation note to help with cash flow but on Friday said that will likely not be needed.
She is doing a cash flow analysis and a RAN may not be needed.
She is worried about the future on aid.
“There is a lot of uncertainty. There are no guarantees.”
