4/7/2010

Cobleskill will host its 14th Downtown Clean-Up Day next Saturday, April 17, just in time for Earth Day, which is marking its 40th year.
Under the direction of Cobleskill Partnership Inc. and Citizens for a Clean Environment, a number of community groups and businesses have already signed up to participate.
The Cobleskill Fire Department will kick off the clean-up at 7am by washing down Main Street.
Volunteers will team up to work three shifts with rakes, brooms and buckets to clear away litter and bag up trash.
Main Street teams will cover the downtown business district from 8-10am, north/south teams will work along Grand Street, 9-11am, and the east/west teams will gather at 10am at the outer bridges and work toward Centre Park, arriving by noon.
In the park, SUNY Cobleskill’s Fisheries and Wildlife Department will kick off a kids’ fishing derby at 9am and are supplying poles, bait, and trout.
American Fisheries Society students will demonstrate and teach fly-tying and with the Timber Sports Team, will have exhibits.
There will also be exhibits and displays under the Noble Ace Hardware tent and interactive and educational presentations under the Kelley Farm and Garden tent.
Beverages, hot dogs, snacks, baked food, books, and t-shirts will be offered for sale in a benefit for local causes.
The 4-H petting zoo will be on hand and Smokey the Bear has also been invited.
There will be a “Green Think Tank” for dropping in suggestions for environmentally-friendlier products and services, and a chance to visit with elected officials and local Boy Scouts—who are celebrating their own 100th anniversary.
There will be a Plant Extravaganza—bring a house plant to exchange—and a place to donate returnable cans and bottles.
The Girl Scouts will have a table for creating “re-use art” as well as a “Free-form Trash Art Corner.”
There will be a drumming circle and a syn-gas demonstration by the SUNY Bioenergy Team.
