Looks like no tax hike in M'burgh village

Middleburgh village property owners will likely see no increase in their village taxes for the 2010-11 fiscal year.
The proposed budget stands at $744,132 with a tax rate of $8.45 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, the same rate as this year.
Village officials will be holding a public hearing on the budget on Monday at 7pm in the village hall.
Spending is up for health insurance and the patrols by the Sheriff’s office but Mayor Bill Ansel-McCabe said the tax rate will remain stable because the village has made the last payment on a truck saving almost $11,000 and there was a rise in assessed value in the village which lowers the tax rates.
Raises were at two percent for most employees. There were no pay increases for the Mayor, trustees or the village attorney.
The Mayor said he was pleased to bring in a budget with no tax rate hike. Last year’s hike was about 1.75 percent.
“We worked very hard on it,” he said of the budget.
“We’re pleased to present a budget with no increase.”
Though some expenses were up, “we just tightened our belts,” the Mayor said.
Street repairs were kept at $43,000 but there are no funds for new sidewalks.
Mayor Ansel-McCabe said he hopes the depot grant will pay for the replacement of some sidewalks.
Replacing sidewalks is becoming very expensive at about $16 a foot, he said.
Water and sewer rates will remain the same.
