"Gasland" coming to Sharon Springs

7/14/2010

Upstate New Yorker Josh Fox’s documentary “Gasland” won the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize, plus awards from the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, The Sarasota International Film Festival, Thin Line Film Festival and The Yale Environmental Film Festival.
This film will be presented in two showings, at 6pm and 8pm on Saturday, July 24 in the auditorium of the Sharon Springs Central School.
These showings are free and open to the public, and parking is available on the school lots and behind the auditorium.
“Gasland” addresses the largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history.
This Halliburton-developed drilling technology, called “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing, has unlocked a “Saudi Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. But in the light of current well control problems with oil in the Gulf of Mexico and gas in Pennsylvania, is fracking safe? And what are the implications for the water supply and roads and other infrastructure in the areas being drilled?
When Mr. Fox was asked to lease his land for drilling, he went on a cross-country road trip to find the answer to these questions.
Sharon Springs farms and businesses who are supporting the showing of this film include Chartwell Studios, The Village Hall Gallery, Adelphi Paper Hangings, Beekman 1802, All Aspects Restoration and Remodeling, Chartwell House, Bunker Hill Farm, Dharma Lea Farm and Skyhill Farm.
