Man killed by falling tree in Cobleskill

A 73-year-old man was killed by falling tree last Tuesday morning in the Village of Cobleskill.
Cobleskill Police said EMS crews responded to 156 Overlook Drive behind Cobleskill Regional Hospital at about 9:10am after a report that a man was hit in the woods by a falling tree.
Robert Muscarella, police said, was working with three other people to cut down a tree. When that tree was about to fall, all four moved out of the way with three going one way and Mr. Muscarella going the other.
The falling tree hit a dead tree on the way down and that tree struck Mr. Muscarella in the head, said Sergeant Rich Bialkowski.
Mr. Muscarella suffered head trauma and was treated by an EMS crew from the Cobleskill Rescue Squad and the county EMS coordinator’s office, police said.
A helicopter was summoned but Mr. Muscarella was unresponsive and he was pronounced dead by a county coroner at the hospital.
It was “a very unfortunate series of events that led to his injuries and death,” Sergeant Bialkowski said.
Mr. Muscarella was from Prattsburgh but was also staying at a residence near where the tree was taken down, police said.
