Spa farmer's market welcomes excess

9/1/2010

The Sharon Springs Farmers Market will be collecting excess homegrown produce to contribute to local charities through the end of the season.
“Times are hard and the recession is making it difficult for some Schoharie County families to make ends meet. We are finding that a lot of local green thumbs have grown more than their families can consume this year,” said Kate Miller, market organizer. “Why let that high-quality, nutritious, locally grown food go to waste when there are Schoharie families in need?”
Many local growers are reporting that it has been a bumper year for their gardens following last summer’s dismal growing season.
A wet 2009 summer contributed to the declaration of agricultural disaster areas in many New York counties.
The 2010 season has been a completely different story–hot days and limited bouts of rain have resulted in tons of tomatoes, plentiful potatoes, zillions of zucchini and serious quantities of squash.
“When the choice is letting food go to waste or lending a hand to local families the decision is easy,” said Ms. Miller. “Nothing is better than knowing you are supporting neighbors who need a little help to get through these hard times.
Schoharie County produce is the best there is and by donating excess crops from your garden, you are helping a local family get the best tasting, most nutritious food around.”
To participate, deliver your excess produce to the Sharon Springs Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.
The Sharon Springs Farmers Market operates from 8am–1pm on Saturdays in the parking lot of My Sisters Place Café, Beechwood Road, Sharon Springs.
